Nuuk is located right at the entrance to the Godthåbsfjord, and is a natural starting point for a number of beautiful sailing and hiking trips. The fjord is known for its whale population, which makes it possible to go on a whale safari in the months of June to November/December. In addition, a number of sailing trips are offered to, among other places, the ice fjord, the abandoned settlement of Qoornoq, the settlement of Kapisillit and Kangeq / Håbets Ø, where Hans Egede settled when he arrived in Greenland in 1721.

In Kolonihavnen in Nuuk, which is the city’s museum area, it is possible to see women sewing “kittat” (leather sewing) for the national costume, visit the kayak house, where kayaks are built, or the National Museum with changing exhibitions and the world-famous mummies from Qilakitsoq v. Uummannaq.

Also visit “Brættet”, which is the place where the town’s local fishermen and trappers sell seals, whales and seasonal fish and birds… redfish, rockfish, cod, fresh trout, heather-smoked trout, reindeer and Greenland’s answer to a bitter version of rhubarb; angelica. There is a tradition of filling the freezer with seasonal animals and thus staying supplied with local produce year-round.

Here you will find, among others, MATAS, El-giganten, clothing and sports stores, cafes, a supermarket, a flower shop, souvenir shop, Kop & Kande and several telecommunications stores.

It’s hard not to buy yourself a bargain in Greenlandic art and clothing. On the main street Imaneq, behind Brugseni, you’ll find Dooit Design and right next door you can buy Moskus products or yarn so you can knit yourself.
