Prior to 1941, the area around Narsarsuaq (“great plain”) in south Greenland was unoccupied flat land. Then the Americans arrived and built an airbase code-named Bluei West One. The airbase was used as a stopover point on the route ferrying warplanes and supplies from North America to Britain during WWII. The USAF left in 1958 and now Narsarsuaq Airport, the only one in south Greenland, operates from the runway that was left behind. Narsarsuaq is a small settlement of about 120 people; most of the buildings are repurposed ones from the 1940s airbase. The 2nd and 3rd images are of Narsarsuaq Museum and the Blue Ice Cafe housed in what used to be the HQ building of the airbase.

I thought I was ready, but this place hit me in the face, around every single corner, in all the best ways possible.
From the +1000 images I took here, I love this picture the most. Because it really shows the majesty of it all. When you stand right there, in front of icebergs bigger than you can ever imagine, all you can do is take it in and SURRENDER.
