Why are Greenlandic villages so colorful? Here`s the history behind it.
The tradition of painting houses in bright colors began with the first wooden homes introduced during the colonial period. Since East Greenlandic was only spoken, and many people couldn`t read Danish, the colors served as a kind of visual signage:
🟥 Red = store or church, including the houses of priests or shop owners.
(the most commonly used color.)
🟨 Yellow = hospitals, including the houses of doctors or nurses.
🟩 Green = telecommunications
🟦 Blue = factories and fish plants
⬛️ Black = police
Today, the colors are often used more decoratively, but some buildings still follow this old, practical system. A beautiful blend of culture, history, and Arctic life.

Nuuk Fjord is the second largest fjord system in the world (about 170km long).

De bultrug, een bijna majestueus zeezoogdier! Met zijn brede rug (met bult) komt hij uit het water, ademt en duikt weer onder, zijn prachtige staartvin vaak als laatste.
De onderkant van de staartvin heeft een uniek patroon en is dus vergelijkbaar met een vingerafdruk bij de mens.
Magisch was het om deze walvissen te zien in de wateren van Groenland.
Eén van de walvissen op de foto heeft een flink litteken op zijn rug. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door schroeven en scheggen van een boot… Gelukkig heeft de bultrug veel blubber (een dikke, isolerende vetlaag) waardoor dit vaak zijn redding is en de wond weer geneest. Het litteken intrigeerde mij en heb informatie hierover gevraagd en gekregen van NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosperic Administration) in Amerika. Zij doen o.a. onderzoek naar dit soort verwondingen bij zeezoogdieren.
