I’ve now spent a little over a week out of my four-month stay in Nuuk.
The first week has been spent on settling in. One way of getting to know a new place, for me, has always been just putting on my shoes and walking around.
Walking is one of the greatest ways to go through life, because we get the chance to stop and spend some time looking at and studying our surroundings.
These pictures are of some of the older wooden houses in Nuuk’s oldest part.
As beautiful and simplistic as these houses are, in a country without no real lumber, these old houses also speak about a time when foreign powers (Denmark and Norway) settled in a place with other ways of living—therefore bringing their own architectural styles and traditions with them.

GROENLAND FAVORIETEN: swipe 👈🏻 en geniet mee van een van mijn lievelingslocaties op deze planeet.
Ik ben ooit gestart met fotograferen omdat ik de waarnemingen die ik in de natuur deed – van vogels tot insecten – wou vastleggen op beeld.
Maar al snel wou ik meer doen registreren. Ik wou het moment vatten.
Voor mijzelf, want het is niet altijd makkelijk om de kracht van overweldigende natuurmomenten precies vast te houden in je herinneringen. Maar ook voor anderen: om te tonen hoe mooi de natuur kan zijn, dichtbij en ver weg.
Sfeer werd zo een van mijn stokpaardjes. Uiteraard moet je daarvoor eerst de basis onder de knie hebben: pas wanneer je niet meer hoeft na te denken over instellingen, belichting, techniek, compositie etc, kan je je voluit toeleggen op het overbrengen van gevoel.
Ik hoop dat het gevoel van deze wondermooie plek tot aan de andere kant van het scherm komt. Dan is mijn missie* geslaagd 🙏🏻: laat maar horen in de reacties hieronder!

Qaqortoq, with a population of just over 3,000, is the largest town in south Greenland and the 4th largest in the country. The town has two churches. The red-painted wooden St Saviour’s Church was commissioned by Danish missionaries in 1832. It is one of the oldest churches in Greenland and forms part of Qaqortoq Museum. It was the only church in Qaqortoq until 1973 when the white concrete Gertrud Rasch’s Church was built to serve the increasing population in the town. Gertrud Rasch was the wife of the Lutheran priest Hans Egede who founded the capital Nuuk. The church with her name is the sister church to Hans Egede Church in Nuuk which was designed by the same architect.

Tasiilaq`s roads curve like rivers between houses painted in every shade of Greenland’s palette – deep reds, pine greens, and sky blues. These colours are more than just colours; they’re practical, too, helping homes stand out against winter’s whiteout.
🏠 Fun fact: Red has historically been the most common house colour in East Greenland because red paint was the easiest and cheapest to import from Denmark.

Ship cruise in Tasermiut in Southeast Greenland was simply awe-inspiring. It reminded me of so many places at once, Patagonia, Yosemite, Norway… I just kept taking photos of the same mountains over and over again.
