Begleitet haben mich dabei Ajako und seine Freunde, Inuit-Jäger aus Qaanaaq. Ajako ist schon vor vielen Jahren verstorben, in meiner Erinnerung lebt er weiter. R.I.P. alter Freund.

Photo by peteryanphoto | In the Land of the Midnight Sun, the skyline of Ummannaq with its colorful houses was taken 📸 at 1am when the sun vanished below the horizon for all of 30 seconds before rising again.
With 1,407 inhabitants in 2020, it is the eighth-largest town in Greenland, and is home to the country’s most northerly ferry terminal.
🤔 I could live here for six months of the year, where there is no grass to cut, and where every person plays a responsible role in sustainability, such as managing waste and conserving resources in this remote environment. Now, if you haven’t been to Greenland, the houses are never in a state of decline. All sport a fresh lick of paint, each a different hue. With people in and out of port to hunt or fish, there is little downtime. Things have to get done for the other six months of the year, where northern #Greenland experiences no night for months in the summer and then virtually no daylight for months in the winter.
💡And well, if I lived in Greenland, I would want to own a paint store.

In the raw silence of East Greenland, the ghost of a forgotten war lingers. Ikateq Airbase, once a secret stronghold during WWII, now lies rusting beneath towering peaks and endless skies. The fuel drums, the broken machinery, the stillness – all reminders of a time when global conflict touched even the most remote parts of the Arctic. For the local population, it is a place filled with memories and history.
Nature is slowly reclaiming it.
