Qassiarsuk is a tiny settlement of 50 people on the opposite side of the fjord from Narsarsuaq in south Greenland. Although first inhabited by the Norse from the 10th to 15th centuries, the present settlement was established in 1924 when Otto Frederiksen settled there and founded Greenland’s first sheep farm. The house in the first image was where Otto and his family lived and is now a museum. The “new” church (2nd image) of 1936 serves both Qassiarsuk and the sheep farms in the surrounding area. The village also has a supermarket next to the jetty (3rd image), a hostel, a cafe, a school and a clinic.

Oldest companions of the Arctic
Guinness World Records has just recognised the Greenlandic sled dog as the world’s oldest dog breed. This breed is a living link to more than 9,500 years of Arctic history. Strong, resilient, and deeply tied to Inuit culture, these dogs are not just working animals – they are guardians of tradition.
🌍 Fun fact: This recognition is part of the 2026 edition of the Guinness World Records book, just released worldwide. Much of the research comes from the Greenland-based Qimmeq project, which documents and preserves the unique heritage of these dogs.

Igatahes kummaline on see, et mu vaim oli siiski koju valmis tulema, nüüd kui peaksin juba Kophenhageni poole sõitma, on mu vaim täitsa teel koju ja siin, Gröönimaal olla, pole enam nii lahe. Tahaks koju nüüd ja kohe:).

We explored one of the most remote towns on the planet 🤯
On our 12 day Greenland expedition cruise with lindbladexp, we stopped in Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the only towns along the 6,200 mile coastline of eastern Greenland and THE only town in the country’s vast northeastern corner 🇬🇱 Its location is incredibly isolated—it’s separated from the western part of the country by the Greenland ice sheet and is actually closer to Iceland than over 90% of the country’s population.
The town has retained an incredibly deep connection to Inuit cultures and traditions. For example, dog sledding is still a vital form of transportation here 🐕🦺 and the town relies heavily on fishing and subsistence hunting, with local hunters pursuing Arctic wildlife, like seals and muskoxen (which residents offered for us to try!), to help fill in the nine months of the year where the nearby fjord is frozen over and they’re unable to receive grocery shipments.
It was SUCH a cool experience to get a small glimpse into what it’s like living in this unique place in the High Arctic. And, honestly, it was worth visiting for the sled dog puppies alone 🥹
