Nuuk day 1
Our Greenland storytelling adventure started with Mao and I stranded outside a closed hostel, no internet in our phones, the cold threatening to take off our fingers if we took off our gloves even for a few seconds. All our bags lay on the icy ground and our bodies were forcing us to find shelter as soon as possible to survive.
A minute later Mao was in a corner shop asking around and a girl in the shop had called her father – Pea the taxi driver. Pea came to our rescue and drove us – for free – in his taxi to a café where we could warm up and buy him a coffee and a bun.
A man sitting close by in the café heard us speaking in Icelandic. He was also Icelandic and he sat with us and shared stories of life in Greenland and his experience with polar bears.
We wanted to hang up posters around town to advertise our storytelling events (here people staple posters on bus shelters). When we arrived in the print shop, a Greenlandic man with strong features and a warm smile told us that we were only printing 10 (big) posters and he didn‘t want to charge us for such few prints. He told us we could just share their name instead, so if you need to print in Nuuk, go to Arctic Printing!
We met more people – the taxi driver who spoke no english but taught us greenlandic for „full moon“, a lady who told us how she won the battle of cancer and teenagers who told us about their favourite café in town.
The kindness, warmth and hospitality we have experienced from locals in only our first day here has more than made up for the freezing cold weather in this beautiful remote place.
Tomorrow we will make sure to dress warmer to survive the cold and continue preparing the storytelling workshop and future collaboration project between Iceland and Greenland!

This statue on a hilltop overlooking Nuuk, Greenland`s capital, is of Hans Egede, who established the first colony in Greenland on behalf of the Danish-Norwegian king. It was among the sights visited by Donald Trump, Jr., in his whirlwind visit/photo op last week, which according to a somewhat sardonic account in the Greenlandic newspaper clocked in at 4 hours, 33 minutes. When I was in Nuuk in 2023, traces of red paint were still on the mouth, splashed there by protesters during worldwide demonstrations against statues of colonial figures that spread from the US after the George Floyd incident. According to the news article, after disembarking a private plane "with a retinue of young American conservative activists wearing identical `Trump Force One` embroidered jackets," Don Jr. headed first to this site, where he "had time to record a video with his mobile phone, in which he said that the missionary Hans Egede came to Greenland in 1721…and that the view from where he stood was `incredible scenery.`" No mention of the protests, which took place during the last Trump administration, or that in July 2020, a referendum was held among the citizens of the region that includes Nuuk and voted 60-40 for it to remain, although its presence still is controversial.

At se min familie og venner igen betød så meget for mig 🥰
Fik også sagt et sidste farvel til mit barndomshjem på Kongevej i Nuuk da den skal rives ned. Jeg har boet i der siden jeg var 1½ år gammel 🥲💗

🇬🇱 s economy relies heavily on exports of shrimp and fish, with fish accounting for over 90% of its exports.
80% of the islands surface is an ice sheet, second only to Antarctica. Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at an alarming rate annually, this global rise in sea level could raise oceans by up to seven meters if the entire sheet were to vanish. In recent years we have seen a lot of interest in the mining and exploration rights into Greenland with people like Bezos and Bill Gates be of particular interest. More recently Trump has displayed his interest.

"Giften under isen" handler om et flystyrt i Grønland, hvor en hemmelig last forsvinder. 40 år efter skal et mineprojekt sættes i gang, men bremses fordi der bliver fundet menneskeknogler 💀 Fundet sætter startskuddet til at gå i gang med at opklare mysteriet om flystyrtet – et mysterium, der skal vises sig at være storpolitisk betændt 🕵️♀️
“Romanen væver en række geopolitiske temaer ind i sin handling – blandt andet stormagternes strategiske interesser fra USA, Kina og Rusland, spørgsmålet om Grønlands selvstændighed og de politiske intriger, som påvirker den grønlandske befolkning,” fortæller Gitte.
